Hygge can be anything from cozying up with a warm blanket to sipping hot tea from your favourite mug. Try these simple and energy-efficient tips to achieve hygge in your home.

Hygge, pronounced “hue-guh,” is a feeling or mood associated with extreme coziness and comfort, which allows for conscious appreciation of the moment.

The concept of hygge isn't about changing your lifestyle – it’s about slowing down to do small things that make your home a cozier, more energy-efficient place.

The same is true for saving energy. Here are some simple tips to help you do both.


Set the mood

Cut the lights and light some candles to set the mood for a cozy evening. The warm glow will instantly make your home feel more peaceful. If you want to get lost in the moment – maybe with your favourite book – but don’t want to worry about flames, try battery-operated flickering flameless LED candles.

Dimmers are another great way to set the mood in any room. Dimming your lights will make your home feel cozier, while also helping your bulbs last longer. And, if you want to ensure you get your lighting just right, try installing lightbulbs that allow you to switch colours for ambiance.


Create atmosphere

Create a healthy, happy atmosphere for yourself. Decorate with houseplants to enhance the quality of life in your home. Plants provide several benefits, including increased humidity, which helps combat dry air during the winter months to keep you more comfortable. You may also consider cooking your hearty meal in bulk to cut down on kitchen energy use throughout the week.

And, what better way to get comfy than to layer up? Pull on your wool socks, bring out your favourite blanket and cozy up on the couch for a games night with family and friends, or maybe a quiet evening with a movie you love. 

You can keep that warm, cozy feeling by ensuring your home is keeping the heat in and the drafts out. You can also invest in a smart thermostat to help keep your home’s temperature exactly where you like it while keeping energy costs low.
