Industrial Energy Efficiency Program

Transform your industrial process with incentives for energy-efficiency improvements.

The IESO’s Save on Energy Industrial Energy Efficiency Program (IEEP) supports customers across Ontario in improving their industrial processes and implementing system optimization projects. The program offers organizations up to $5 million in financial incentives for each large, industrial energy-efficiency project accepted into the program. Eligible projects will deliver electricity savings using proven commercial technologies to lower energy consumption and reduce electricity bills.

How does the program work?

The IEEP provides incentives to qualified industrial participants over multiple competitive rounds of funding. In each round, participant applications are ranked on the electricity savings their projects can achieve cost effectively, among other criteria. The organizations with the highest-ranked applications will be eligible to receive funding for their project(s).

Prospective participants should submit their initial application following the steps outlined in the “How can I apply” section below. The IESO will review each application for eligibility. After this review, the IESO will invite eligible applicants to submit a detailed proposal with a Measurement and Verification (M&V) Plan. The IESO will notify successful applicants and will then work with them to enter into a Participant Agreement. If you need more information or are interested in making a submission, please contact us at IndustrialEEProgram@ieso.ca.

Who is eligible?

Participants must be located in Ontario and:

  • Be owners and/or operators of an industrial facility, or
  • Owners and/or operators of an industrial process in a non-industrial facility, or
  • Third-party applicants with the authority to implement a project at an industrial facility, or with the authority to implement an industrial process in a non-industrial facility.

Projects must:

  • Involve an energy-efficiency improvement applied to, or in support of, an industrial process.
  • Propose a minimum electricity savings of 2,000 MWh per year (which must represent a reduction of at least 15 percent of the baseline electricity use of the relevant industrial process). A project may consist of multiple sub-projects, each of which is to deliver a minimum electricity savings of 500 MWh per year.
  • Use technology that is commercially available and not excluded by the program eligibility rules.

Note: Please refer to the Evaluation Criteria and in the Key Program Documents section.

How can I apply?

  1. Log in to the IEEP Portal to submit your application. You will need to create an account with the IESO if you do not currently have one.
  2. The IESO will review your application for eligibility and respond accordingly.
  3. Participants whose applications are deemed eligible for the program must submit a more detailed application, including a M&V plan and other supporting documents through the IEEP Portal.
