Commercial and retail winner

Landmark Cinemas Canada LP

Landmark Cinemas achieved a 33% reduction in electrical energy consumption in 2024, with energy savings of 2,800 MWh, as well as demand savings of 185 kW and natural gas savings of 1,375 GJ. As a Science-based Target Initiative (SBTi)-committed company, Landmark requires annual reductions in carbon emissions, with a net-zero 2050 goal. Energy consumption for each site is reviewed monthly, quarterly and annually, and any anomalies are investigated to determine their root cause so they can be resolved as quickly as possible.

Education winner

Algonquin College of Applied Arts and Technology

Algonquin College achieved a 45% reduction in overall electricity consumption, in addition to 112 kW of demand savings, and 42,200 GJ of natural gas savings in 2024. To ensure the long-term success of these initiatives, Algonquin College has invested in campus-wide energy efficiency projects totaling over $18 million, financed through generated savings. It has also set ambitious cost-saving targets, aiming for over $1.1 million in annual operating cost reductions across electricity, natural gas, and water usage.

The Hospital for Sick Children

The Hospital for Sick Children’s Peter Gilgan Centre for Research and Learning (PGCRL) achieved a 1.5% reduction of their overall electricity consumption and reduced natural gas consumption by 43,700 GJ in 2024, thanks to several energy management projects and tools. Energy management initiatives are anchored in long-term sustainability, driven by strategic planning, continuous innovation and alignment with Toronto’s TransformTO Net Zero Strategy. Central to this commitment is the SickKids Environmental Sustainability Strategy, launched in January 2023, which empowers stakeholders across the organization to embed environmental responsibility into all aspects of operations.

Continuous energy improvement winner

Dream

Dream achieved 1,900 MWh in electrical energy savings, a 2.65% reduction in their overall electrical energy consumption. Dream credits a comprehensive operational efficiency playbook for their success in energy savings, having standardized their day-to-day operations to reduce energy consumption over the long and short term, and for helping them to reach their net-zero emissions target by 2035. They are participants in the SEM program and used findings from the program’s energy management assessment to develop their operational playbook. They participate in peak demand curtailments and have enabled systems to shift to lower consumption modes with a single click.
