At Great Wolf Lodge, nothing gets in the way of a great customer experience. And now, an extensive lighting retrofit funded through the Save on Energy Retrofit program is not only saving the resort $154,000 annually in electricity costs, it’s shining a whole new light on the meaning of fun.
Every day is an adventure for the hundreds of families who visit Great Wolf Lodge – a 25-acre indoor resort sporting over 100,000 square feet of water rides, slides and other activities located just north of the area’s other big attraction, Niagara Falls.
"An extensive energy retrofit completed in 2017 not only reduced the facility’s electricity costs," says Patrick Dunn, the resort’s Assistant General Manager, it also visibly improved the hotel’s overall ambiance and as well as having had a positive impact on staff.

The Lodge converted most exterior incandescent lighting to energy-efficient LED lights, and also switched to LED lights in the waterpark area, the stage show area, in hallways, as well as the dining area. For this work alone, the resort is saving approximately 1.4 million kWh of electricity per year, the equivalent of 400 room bookings annually. That’s on top of the savings achieved thanks to variable frequency drives that were installed in the pump room, as well as occupancy sensors and smart thermostats that were added to the facility’s 406 guest suites.
Dunn says the retrofit was also a real hit with the resort’s 700 employees. “The success of our energy management program has motivated our staff. Now we’re able to focus on what’s truly important to the Lodge – creating exceptional customer experiences each and every time.”
